Power loss behaviour - is there some basic action?

Just order yourself a small APC UPS. They work.

Install apcupsd on your server and plug it into the USB connection on
the back of the UPS. That takes care of all of the below issues. The
server will know when there is a power failure and shut itself down
elegantly when the battery is getting done.

You set the BIOS to boot when power is applied so it doesn't matter if
you're 10,000 miles away when the server goes down due to extended
power failure. I know that this all works - I watched my own server
(industrial Jetway mainboard based) power down and restart perfectly
when I had my consumer unit replaced which involved power down for a
couple of hours or so.
