kicad does not take any keyboard input

Hello,

this is on ubuntu-24.04.1:

kicad EDA system does not take any keyboard input at all. No shortcuts in
schematic editor. Not in filter entry when adding/searching for a
component. And even not in the file dialog when you are asked to enter a
filename whe creating a new project. Simply nothing.

But the text fields are not entirely dead: I can actually type something
e.g. into a terminal window, select this text  with the mouse and copy it into
kicad's text fields by pressing the middle mouse button.

I have already removed and reinstalled the whole kicad suite. Did not help.

This renders kicad to be completely unusable.

Any ideas?
