Some ways to test the integrity of a drive:
1. Try the device on/in a different computer.
2. Install the package "f3" and use the command f3write to write a whole
load of test files to the device and f3read to verify their integrity.
3. Have you considered using fsck?

Also: I don't think you mentioned which filesystem your drive is formatted
to.
