It uses some of the ubntu archive packages but it is its own distro
with its own setup completely unrelated to Ubuntu ... If you need to
know about differences you will need to ask the people that created
them and I guess you can only find these in a linuxmint forum ...
Mint simply overlays default packages and settings from their own
archive (and often without even tagging this in the package versions as
proper debian policy would require, so these changes are often hard to
find for an outsider without unpacking each package)
My main guess for your issues would simply be that they follow their
own Session setup policy and probably also use a different display
manager (login tool) while Ubuntu pretty much just uses GDM and
upstream GNOME defaults with some minor distro adjustments (theming
etc)
