installing ubuntu from bootable usb, using lvm

Thanks for the reply.

To begin, the "better" solution would be to have a larger
primary/internal drive 1-2T drive, and have a separate external drive
as a backup. This would negate the need to have OS on one smaller
internal drive, with the rest of the "apps" on an external drive.

However, this isn't doable given cost/resources at the moment.

So, I'm exploring alternative approaches. And yep, I fully realize
that this "approach" would be fragile, given that either drive failing
would be a bit of an issue.
