I presume mean 128GB? That's plenty big enough for an Ubuntu install.

Do you have large databases? Is that what could fill it up? In which
case put those on the external hard drive.

I'm not sure what you had in mind with LVM, but making the internal and
external drives all part of the same volume group, I think could be
disastrous! And from what you've said so far, I don't think that it's
necessary.

You could, for example, just have the external drive automounted to a
suitable directory in your $HOME folder, or even to $HOME itself. I
suggest the former so that your system is still usable without the
external drive plugged in.

Yes, you can symlink from the external drive to the internal, but not
for OS directories. Just do this in your home directory.
