installing ubuntu from bootable usb, using lvm

    again, right, but to simply "place them on the hdd", I'd have to
make changes to dirs for the database, whereas if I symlinked, the
drive locations would stay the same.

   I generated a rough list of the apps/stuff that I would imagine
would be installed onto the laptop, and based upon the install dirs, I
would then symlink these dirs from the internal ssd to the external
hdd dirs, which should work.  But again, to your point, if the
external drive isn't available, it breaks.
