diagnosing flakey IO such as "video2" stuck open and second ethernet jack takes many tries to connect

I bout a couple of these cheap cyberbeek minicomputers and overall they seem to be ok products
but I've had a couple of issues. On the one, "video2" always seems to get stuck open regardless
of which camera is assigned to that dev. It seems to have with both uvccapture and ffmpeg
and both appear to work on video0 and video4. I can use lsof and see the capture
program is stuck with the device open but just need to keep killing it. uvccapture anyway
I could probably build from source and run a debug build in gdb if that would help. 
But right now the system is remote and I can only talk to it by email :) 

On a second machine, I have 2 ethenet jacks and the one reliably sees my 1gb cable and connects
well but I can see in the log the other jack may first connect and disconect at a lower speed
but eventually after minutes may connect and work reliably.  Is there any software configuration
that could cause this or other things to try to isolate the problem to hard or software?
