Is this Elementary OS 8?

If so, that is the version that introduces a Wayland version of the
Pantheon desktop. All that GRUB mode setting is likely to stop Wayland
working -- that is twenty-teens troubleshooting and it's mostly
obsolete now.

On the login screen there is an option to log in with Wayland or with
X.org. I suggest that whatever you are using, try the other.
