How to get ffmpeg v 7.1 or higher?

I appear to have been confused by the numbers involved.
Synaptic shows
Version: 7:4.4.2-0ubuntu0.22.04.1
which I perceive as a subversion of version 7
However, at the command line, is
~ > ffmpeg --version
ffmpeg version 4.4.2-0ubuntu0.22.04.1
showing that what I have, is a subversion of version 4.
Confusededed.
