[ubuntu-za] Installation problems

Thanks to everybody who came up with suggestions to solve the
installation problems on my system. The solution was actually pretty
simple, but illustrates another point in Benjamin Humphrey's criticism
of Linux. Both Ubuntu 10.04 and Mint 9.0 now only supports the AHCI
protocol for accessing SATA2 drives and not the IDE protocol.. Win Xp
supports IDE, but is too old to support AHCI and I had to install the
Intel drivers. This could only be done during the windows installation
and I had to reinstall. Why does ubuntu and mint include the ide
protocol for sata 1 drives but not for sata 2? This is really ridiculous.

Secondly, line input is muted by dedault in both ubuntu and mint. You
can only fix this through the command line. Why this stupid default setting?

There are several postings on the international forums of guys simply
going back to windows because they could not access sata drives or
because they could not get inline sound.

Linux will not become mainstream until bugs like these are fixed.

Thanks

Dave
