Hi Robin, the wiki page on restricted formats says:
"...patent and copyright restrictions complicate free operating
systems distributing software to support proprietary formats."
and that "Ubuntu's commitment to only include completely free software
by default means that proprietary media formats are not configured
'out of the box'."
It's a good way to encourage the use of free formats too, I try use
ogg/ogv instead of mp3/avi for example.
