This above was your mistake. You *can* use the alternate cd to provide a
sort of local repo for upgrading. BUT this is only done from with in an
already existing ubuntu install.

During the install there are warnings saying it will format your
disk/partion.

Was there a reason you chose not to upgrade the normal way via the network?

As far as I know Unity (which Ubuntu Natty uses) does not have a main menu
(at least in the way you were used to.

Since this is a "clean" wiped out install why not simply install with 10.10?

Generally before upgrading an OS it is good practice
