Hmm, to call it a disappointment is a bit over the top IMO. Although
from what happened I can understand why.
I'm not sure that they specified that one should boot from the CD. It
would appear that it will do a clean install. The upgrade guide[0]
worked perfectly for me with everything in working order. I only broke
my ubuntu when fighting with GNOME3, but was warned beforehand that it
might break.
To use the "main menu" you should select Ubuntu Classic from the
options before you log in, which will use the GNOME 2.8 session
instead.

Not sure about the downgrade, but I assume a fresh install would break
less things.
You did back up your data before attempting the upgrade right?
