They either misspoke or you misheard...  You insert the Alt-install CD 
into a running system to upgrade.  Work well, and fast.

That said, you can run the gnome classic from what you have.  Decide on 
login.  But you can also add WINE and launchers to unity.  (also known 
as "What were they thinking? UI)
