I agree; linux is trying to go mainstream and decisions like this are
counter-productive.  Personally, I would have preferred a simple
method of choosing between Unity or not; possibly at login or via the
preferences menu.  Disabling Unity and reverting back to the "normal"
gnome desktop GUI is pretty painless once you know how but it does
involve digging around in config files; something the less
computer-literate user will never do.  This will lead to them
switching to another distro or even worse reverting back to winblows.
Linux is all about choice and freedom - so don't go taking it away.

As has been already said, Unity is not worse nor better but different
and unfamiliar.  Those who have taken the time to get to know Unity
and become comfortable with it, swear by it however there are those
who don't want to go through that just yet.
