I need to clariffy this.  It does not return you to the normal desktop. 
  A lot of the features I use daily are just not there.  They were 
removed from Gnome 3 entirely.  Getting a full desktop with all of the 
functionality in Gnome 2 simply can not be done right now in the current 
versions of Ubuntu.
