"virus-like culture" ?
It may seem like it, but problems like this usually happen when we try
integrating proprietary software like these graphics drivers, with an
otherwise open system.
It's definitely not a virus or anything like it. It's likely just a setting,
or some configuration.
It might also be that Compiz Settings Manager overrides the "None" setting,
but in my experience, that should work - i think they write to the same
settings file.

Where's the fun in that? lol
If you mess with it, you may break it yes. But half the fun is fixing it
again... ok, maybe not so much fun for everyone.
But It's rarely necessary to do a complete re-install. This is not windows.
I've never had a problem that I couldn't fix eventually with enough effort.

Most of what I know I've learnt by fixing problems like this.
