Hi Bill
As you deduced it's likely one or more files in your home dir are missing
with your GUI environment. Log in on a virtual console and try moving them
[one by one] to another directory. Off the top of my head, some suggestions
in no particular order: .config, .local, .dbus, .gconf, .gnome2, .cache,
.ICEauthority, .Xauthority, perhaps even .compiz if it exists.
After [re]moving each one hit ctrl+alt+f7/8/9 and log in normally to test.
If the gui freezes up, go back to the VC and issue sudo restart lightdm
Hope this helps
Tom
