[ubuntu-za] Startup and shut down delays

Hi Miles and the team, I adjusted the outcome of "sudo nano
/etc/default/grub" on my friend's machine to match my own exactly, but
there is no change.
The Ubuntu 14.04 versions were clean installed from the same disc, but
mine still boots and shuts down "cleanly" while his shows all those
black screens full of writing. There really is a lot of it and the
screens come and go, on one of them I noticed "GiB" at the top and a few
comments about running scripts towards the bottom, if that could help.
My outcome is shown below. (Two changes were made, shown in blue - the
first was an alteration, the second a deletion - shown by a line)
