This is a little drastic, but...  If you boot the live CD, and sudo to 
root, and run chroot on the mounted drive, you are in the filesystem and 
can install other (older) kernals.  This is not a trivial operation, and 
you can really break stuff this way!  But it is also a powerful tool 
that can fix a lot.

Another option is to boot a newer version livecd and upgrade.
