[Bug 188486] Re: New icons bog down audio directory windows in apps

It depends on the speed of the machine and may not be as severe with
the released version of Hardy, as Nautilus overall seemed to speed up as
the OS matured. Still, FORGET these icons on a Pentium 3 or an early
Pentium 4(in the 1.8 GHZ class) unless you use IceWm instead of Metacity
or Compiz. The windows opened by programs bog down at 1.8 GHZ, and all
of Nautilus bogs down on these icons at 500 MHZ.
Nautilus windows are not bothered anywhere nearly as bad as things
like Audacity file windows! Nautilus will just open and change
locations a little slower, while it is difficult to scroll though a
large directory in Audacity's file windows.
On a 2.45 GHZ overclocked Athlon A64, the speed of loading any version
of the icons is fast enough in Nautilus itself that few will notice
this, but slower machines have trouble. Audacity file windows still
have problems with large directories, though. Have not tried multicore
machines.
There is a drastic difference between the speed of loading these icons
and a theme like Human or Gnome on an older machine, and a measurable
but not bothersome(stopwatch class) difference(in Nautilus itself) on
machines in the 2GHZ plus range.
Also, if you use these icons on any machine, avoid using very large
audio directories not divided into subdirectories. My "music" directory
is like this, and even on my fastest machines I open this in Nautilus
and drag the file into Audacity to avoid the "slow scroll" Audacity
mess.
Yes, the bug still exists. Set up a LARGE directory full of audio
files and see what happend when you open it form Audacity.
