That still happens in the current version, also there's a HUGE lockup-
like wait if you hit "reload all feeds" on this machine.  It basically
stands still for about a minute ( Metacity thinks it has hanged and will
offer to force it to close for you)


As for me, I have ~90 active feeds that I follow, to give an impression on the scale of things where I see a horrible slowdown.
