Then stop the display manager service before you logout.
sudo service lightdm stop
or
sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm stop
resp. replace lightdm with the DM you're using.
You want a DM after startup? Why do you want tty instead of the greeter
after logout?
JFTR, you are aware that you could use Ctrl+Alt+F1 to Ctrl+Alt+F7 to
switch between the GUI and tty? For *buntu you should get back to the
GUI by Ctrl+Alt+F7 and get a virtual console by Ctrl+Alt+F1 to Ctrl+Alt
+F6.
