You could likely do this by just disabling the window manager from
starting at machine boot, which will cause you to get a tty login prompt
since no X server is being started.
Then, in your .profile or .bashrc, put in the startx commands to launch
the graphical session (assuming you always want that to happen, as opposed
to typing in the startx command manually once logged in).
When you log out from the graphical session, you'll be dumpped back at a
system login prompt.
