The kernel in Ubuntu 4.10 is unchanged since release, except for security updates.
The fact that it is taking longer to boot, well before any Ubuntu software is
loaded, seems to indicate that you have a lower-level system problem. Try
resetting your BIOS to "safe defaults" or similar if the system allows this.
Also try a memory test from GRUB. Try booting in recovery mode from grub, to
see which modules are being loaded at the point where it hangs. Try booting an
Ubuntu 5.04 live CD and see if it works OK.
