I was able to use my client's hard drive again. I couldn't try your mkfs idea,
because the data on this disk is important and the owner is still hoping it can
be rescued some day.

The bug is NOT Ubuntu specific! The same symptoms appear with at least Knoppix 4.0.

Having the drive around again does give me dmesg output to post, though:

These "No Sense" messages I almost always get when I use broken hard drives via
the USB enclosure, so that's not specific to the memory leaking drive.

The enclosure is not used with the drive it ships with.

The broken drive is:
 Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9
 60GB ATA/133 HDD
 Code: YAR41VWO

But it has its PCB from another broken drive:
 Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9
 60GB ATA/133 HDD
 Code: YAR41VWO

 SN: Y2S7EX6E
