On 9.10 (kernel 2.6.31-14-generic) I get better values but still big
difference

root at ubuntu:/home/ubuntu# hdparm -t /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
 Timing buffered disk reads:  360 MB in  3.01 seconds = 119.47 MB/sec
root at ubuntu:/home/ubuntu# hdparm -t --direct /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
 Timing O_DIRECT disk reads:  604 MB in  3.00 seconds = 201.30 MB/sec
