Hey again :-)

I think I have it working now -- I found /etc/default/acpi-support and 
starting flipping switches in there :-) Not sure which one did it, maybe 
turning off the warm boot for the video card, or enabling the setting 
that makes it go to the console and back.

If you want me to, I can try to be more systematic about it to work out 
which one fixed it, but if not I'll just leave it be :-)
