I just wanted to add a comment to Ubuntu bug #1 but it didn't work. Anyway it's better to post my comment here.
As the author of the web site wyoGuide I'm working on improving the Linux desktop market share since a few years. I think I've now
come to a solution which might really work towards this goal. My proposal doesn't lower Mirosoft's market share per se but it gives every platform (Windows, Linux, Mac, ...) the chance to compete on equal terms, so finally the best of these platforms gets the biggest market share. Of course I think Linux is the best and also think Linux would gain most. But my proposal is fair for all platforms, even for e.g. MacOSX or Minix3.
I think it worth to look into
http://wyoguide.sourceforge.net/index.php?page=Cross-platform.html
and also check the rest of wyoGuide.
