Hi I use a Harware-modem for Ubuntu. These used to be real Expensive,
but now in the last little while they got real cheap. Tiger Direct
www.tigerdirect.ca has one called an Actiontec Modem it comes from AOL.
It costs about $16.00, It has all the cords, Power Pack, RS232 Cable,
USB Cable, even a telephone wire with ends on it. Turn off the Computer!
It is real simple to connect. Either use the RS232 cable connected to
Comm Port one or two, or Plug in the USB cable. Plug in the Telephone
line to your surge Suppressor Power Bar, and then plug it into the wall.
Plug in and hook up the Power Pack. Turn on the computer that has UBUNTU
installed. Or use you Modem that you have, and then do this either way.
Now Click on System, in the Top Menu besides Applications, Place, then
hover the cursor over Administration. In the drop down Menu click on
Networking. Put in the Password, when asked. The Modem will show up as
un-configured. Click on the Modem Dialogue Button, then in the pane to
the right of that Click on Properties. In the Dialogue Box that comes
up, under the General Tab, Enable this Connection, click on the little
box in-front of where it says this. That puts a check mark in that Box.
Then put in your Dial Up Phone Number, as a series of numbers without
"-" in between the numbers. Put the Prefix number in if needed, or leave
this Blank. Then put in your User Name that your IP gave you. then Type
in your IP Password.

Under the Modem Tab where it says Modem Port, Click on Autodetect after
a minute or two it will come up with the modem port plus let you know
that the modem is working. Dial Type Tones, Volume Low, to start with.

Under the Options Tab put a check mark in front of each Option. (I'm
using Ubuntu 6.06-1 LTS) Now Close the Dial up Properties Box. Then
Click on The modem button again, it should say Configured! Then Click on
Connect. if it was hooked up correctly, you should hear the sign on
tones. Now you are on the Internet with Ubuntu!

Alfred!
