If you're willing to go out on a limb a little bit, LyX is a fantastic
program. It's not quite like Word or most other word processors as it
asks you to focus more on document structure than appearance. In other
words, you'll write your document specifying things as chapters,
sections, etc. and inserting objects like tables or graphics, but leave
the exact formatting (spacing, page breaks) of the document to LyX.
(Which isn't to say you can't control these things at all, just that LyX
handles them in a nice way).
It might not be quite what you're looking for, as doing things with
fonts tends to be on the more arcane side, but it might be worth a look
see :) It's in the ubuntu repo's as 'lyx'
