The OP specifically said that they wanted to go to a separate /home layour.

You should of course choose what suits you best, but personally, I see
no extra hassle /whatsoever./

Currently, I have Ubuntu 12.04, pre-13.04 and Debian "sid" all sharing
/home and indeed /home/lproven. Works fine.
