kubuntu 20.4 login frozen

Yes , sorry I couldn't remember the name.
my machine is HP OMEN about two years old.
I was doing some cleaning updates , upgrades etc
then rebooted and this happened. I may have purged something I shouldn't.
I don't believe I did any manual deletes.

yes a lot.
I have been using Kubuntu for may be two years minimum one year on this
machine.
If I do a boot USB then, would I be able to restore that operating system
without erasing data.
I think it is possible anyway but as I have three Operating systems.
I know the windows will not be overwritten but will I be able to choose
which ubuntu I want to restore ?
I installed two versions of Ubuntu in case the Kubuntu crashed and I lost
everything.
It has happened in the past and I had to erase the disk and do a fresh
install.
But with a spare Ubuntu I am able to access disk data.
Please suggest best option. Ideal will be to restore.
