"several gigabytes more space" might or might not solve the problem.

Whether it makes sense to shrink, move, enlarge partitions, merge mount
points or even reformat partitions depends on how much space is still
available in bytes or whether it is an inode problem and, of course, on
the type of usage.

Not enough space in inodes or bytes? How much bytes are used, how much
bytes are free?

If the duvet is too short, you can bend your legs to keep your nose and
toes warm, but eventually you will want to stretch your legs out again,
so this is only a very short-term solution that won't last all night.

However, you should only drive to the next petrol station on reserve.
You should not attempt a desert crossing with the tank reserve.
