I feel your pain on this one on a deep, visceral level. Scrollbars
were just fine the way they were from the beginning. The modern
variant is surely the product of a foolish decision by an overexcited
and ambitious developer for improvement for improvement's sake rather
than actual improvement borne of necessity, and for some bizarre
reason, it seems to have caught on as the thing to do in several
pieces of software.

Luckily, you can sometimes wrestle with it and get the toolbars to
behave as they used to, but it's yet another tweak we have to
remember to do upon installation and isn't always available in all
programs. All that to basically say that you're not alone on this one.
