Although I have a background in support (Microsoft), since changing over
to Ubuntu I've let that side of things slide a bit - not as much need to
keep fixing stuff basically.

So here's the thing, I seem to have missed a step somewhere. Could
someone please give me a bit of un-techno-jargonned description and
background on Unity. I've looked online a bit, and while I've seen
mock-up screens, etc, I haven't yet found any really basic info, never
mind potential pros & cons, or reasons given for the change within
Ubuntu. 

I'd really appreciate some good clip-note info here. Thanks.
